More than 110 golfers hit the links “Fore” the love of local high school graduates. Supporters of The Pittsburgh Italian Scholarship Fund “teed” up support for some very academically qualified, college bound students getting ready to embark on their continuing education. The Thirty-fifth Annual Golf Classic fundraising event was held Tuesday, August 14, 2018 at Valley Brook Country Club, with one mission in mind – to help “chip” away at the staggering costs of today’s college tuition rates.
Attendees enjoyed an Italian Buffet Lunch before an 11:45 am shot-gun start to play eighteen holes on one of the South Hills’s premier courses. Afterwards, guests gathered for cocktails and hors d’oeuvres before the evening program commenced. Festivities included the presentation of the 2016 Pittsburgh Italian Scholarship Fund Person of the Year Award which highlights a local Pittsburgher of Italian descent who has demonstrated meritorious distinction in his or her profession. This year the Pittsburgh Italian Scholarship Fund took great pride in honoring Anthony M. DiGioia, Jr., PhD.P.E.
Selection Chairman, Ben DelPrince commented, “Dr. DiGioia will be joining a very prestigious list of past honorees. We are very pleased to recognize him for his accomplishments and contributions to our scholarship winners.”
Highlights of the evening program also included honoring the following 2018 Pittsburgh Italian Scholarship Fund Recipients. Please join us in congratulating the following local students:
- Samuel Barbano received the Scalo Family Scholarship Award. He is a 2018 graduate of Baldwin High School and will be continuing his education at the University of Pittsburgh where he will pursue his degree in Chemical Engineering.
- Jenna Barbour is a 2018 graduate of Greensburg Salem High School. She plans to attend the University of Pittsburgh and major in Neuroscience and Psychology.
- Reed Campolong received the Gambino and Petrelli Families Scholarship Award. He is a 2018 graduate of Thomas Jefferson High School and will be continuing his education at Rochester Institute of Technology where he will pursue his degree in Software Engineering.
- Jamilyn Dykes is a 2018 graduate of Kiski Area High School. She plans to attend Penn State University and major in Neuroscience and Psychology.
- Cory Fleming received the Joseph Mammarelli, Sr. Memorial Scholarship. He is a 2018 graduate of Monessen High School and plans to attend West Minster College and major in Mechanical Engineering.
- Mark Frazee is a 2018 graduate of Washington High School. He plans to attend Duquesne University and major in Journalism.
- Zachary Gazze received the John H. Pelusi, Sr. and Geno Thomaselli Graduate Scholarship Award. He will pursue his degree in Medicine and Medical Research from Temple University Lewis Katz School of Medicine.
- Emily Rose is a 2018 graduate of Hempfield Area High School. She plans to attend West Virginia University and major in Pharmacy.
- Amanda Sciulli received the Barsotti/Poli Family Scholarship Award. She is a 2018 graduate of Penn-Trafford High School and will be continuing her education at Carlow University where she will pursue her degree in Nursing.
- Kaitlyn Zigmond is a 2018 graduate of Oakland Catholic. She plans to attend Penn State University and major in Undergraduate Studies. Her scholarship was made possible by a friend of the Pittsburgh Italian Scholarship Fund.
