I am proud to be an Italian American. My father was born in the Abruzzo region of Italy, which makes our family deeply rooted in strong family values, rich cultural traditions, and a passion for food (especially pasta) and wine. Lisa and I continue to pass these traditions on to our children and grandchildren. I am deeply honored, and grateful, to receive this recognition.

Mangia bene, ridi spesso, ama molto! Eat well, laugh often, and love

— Bob Pompeani

A Pittsburgh Tradition Since 1984

Each year, the Pittsburgh Italian Scholarship Fund honors a local professional of Italian descent whose career and character reflect the best of our community. For more than four decades, Bob Pompeani has been the voice of Pittsburgh sports as a sports anchor at KDKA-TV, where he began his career in 1982.

Bob’s story is a Western Pennsylvania Italian story. His grandparents, Domenick and Elvira Pompeani, emigrated in the 1920s from Ripa Fagnano Alto, a small village in the Abruzzo region of Italy, and settled in Aliquippa — where his grandfather worked in the steel mills and his father, Pat, was born. His mother, Virginia, came from the Jula family, with deep roots of their own in the Western Pennsylvania community.

Send a Student to College

Since 1984, the Pittsburgh Italian Scholarship Fund has awarded renewable scholarships to graduating high school seniors of Italian descent who demonstrate academic excellence and financial need. Every gift — at any level — goes directly toward that mission.
